Lady Nefer Ra (which means beauty of the sun), has studied music from an early age. It has always been her heartfelt desire to excel in life, love and music. Nefer Ra is a highly energized, spiritually filled musician who possesses a positive and winning attitude. Born in Newport News, Virginia, Nefer Ra comes from a musical family. While attending elementary school, she joined the school orchestra and began playing the violin and later the flute.

In her latter school years, and at the request of her junior and high school music instructors, Nefer-Ra began playing different instruments. A flutist at the time, she was given a baritone saxophone and asked to learn the part. As a result of her learning the part in a very timely manner, whenever a composition required an instrument no one played, Nefer-Ra became the girl. By the time Nefer-Ra graduated high school, she had play every woodwind with the exception of Eb clarinet and alto saxophone, (those players were always plentiful). Nefer-Ra also played the marimbas, timpani and the bass guitar. When Nefer-Ra graduated high school, she was awarded 4 musical scholarships and was the recipient of the Los Aficionados Jazz Society Scholarship and the Louis Armstrong Jazz Award. She attended Norfolk State University as a Music Media major. Her major instrument at that time was the upright bass. Nefer-Ra later returned to Old Dominion University, majored in Counseling and minored in music (flute). Nefer Ra also works as a Behavior Counselor working with children in Hampton, Va.

Lady Nefer-Ra is an avid listener of the musical group Earth Wind and Fire, and has always been fascinated by the spiritual consciousness of Maurice White and the political fortitude of Fela Kuti; as a result, Nefer-Ra has recently begun studying the metaphysical principles of Ancient Kemet (Egypt).
Nefer Ra is a lover and protector of animals; portions of cd’s sold will be donated to ASPCA.

Through the years, Lady Nefer-Ra has played with several local and traveling bands. While performing with the family band, A Step Beyond, they opened for musical greats such as; Alphonso Blackwell, Jimmy McGriff and Ahmad Jamal. In 2001, Nefer-Ra traveled with the band “The Majestics” to South Korea to entertain the troops. While performing with the local band “The TMS Project”, they were invited to play in Richmond, VA for the Friday Night Jazz series, and opened for the great Joe Sample. In the same year, they were asked to perform in the Norfolk Jazz Festival and opened for Boney James and Pieces of a Dream. In 2010, Nefer Ra traveled to Senegal, Africa, and while there, met performed and recorded with Senegalese music icon Mame Goor Jazaka, and is a featured artist on the musical selection, “THIANTE”  available on YouTube.
